A NIGHT OWL REVIEWS BOOK REVIEW | Reviewed by: Edie
Kate Carpenter believed she had recovered from the horrific death of her husband, Tennessee Highway Patrolman Rob Carpenter, two years before. Some people, including her best friend Patti Jo, said otherwise. Kate knew she did not need the added stress of a difficult student thrust upon her by her principal, nor did she appreciate the so-called drug cop Mr. Hamilton also unexpectedly forced upon the class.
Undercover ATF Special Agent Mike Lehmann used the drug awareness program in order to visit Kate’s class as he investigated the alleged death of her husband. During the investigation, authorities found Rob may have faked his own death and they suspected he was involved in a drug running operation. Mike needed to know if Kate had any information as to Rob’s whereabouts, and if she was involved with his disappearance.
Sparks began to fly as soon as they met, and not in a good way. Mike seemed to upset the testy teacher at every turn, placing the investigation in jeopardy. He knew he needed to keep her nearby in order to obtain the information required to close the case. Kate was tired of the pressure others placed on her to get back into the dating game, and knew she did not need the sexy cop underfoot.
Her growing attraction to Mike, the frightening anonymous calls to her house, the increased anxiety about the new kid in class, and the vivid dreams about her husband’s death all added to her level of stress.
In Murder on the Mountain, Maddie James has written a superb suspense that smoothly builds to a riveting climax. No one’s life is left untouched by the lies, deception, and dangerous acts committed by desperate people. Circumstances and choices take Mike and Kate on a collision course with death. Will they survive the forces of evil working against them?
If you enjoy a good suspense novel, grab this story as quickly as possible. Beware; it is difficult to stop reading once you start.
