la's story drew me in from the first and I enjoyed reading it.
A Soldier's Duty is dark and edgy and what makes it work is that la is such a straightforward character - she came to join, she is there to do a job, and she will not going to let anything or anyone interfere with what she has to do.
That is part of her, but not all of her. She is also caring and loving, she just does not let many people see tha

Kudos to Jean Johnson for successfully intertwining fantasy with romance, the plot itself with regards to the politics of the world she built would be fascinating even without the romance woven in. Not that the story of Mariel and Evanor isn't spellbinding in its own right, pun intended.
Nightfall and the world within which it resides is well thought out and adds immeasurably to the story itself, I found
