Broken Blade

Once a fabled Blade of Namara, Aral Kingslayer fought for justice and his goddess alongside his familiar, a living shadow called Triss. Now with their goddess murdered and her temple destroyed, they are among the last of their kind. Surviving on the fringes of society, Aral becomes a drunken, broken, and wanted man, working whatever shadowy deal comes his way. Until a mysterious woman hires him to deliver a secret message-one that can either redeem him or doom him.

BROKEN BLADE, the first in McCullough's new fantasy series "Fallen Blade", seemed to me the perfect answer to my assassin/thief/fantasy blues. I haven't really found anything to replace Brent Week's "Night Angel" trilogy yet, and this sounded perfect. Fallen Goddess, assassin on the run, complex fantasy society--seemed to fit the bill. In some ways it was diverting and intriguing, but the problem was more

Ravirn saves the day, again! Except this time with an ending that even while I saw it coming, maybe, was still unexpected. The idea of Ravirn, or Raven, being recruited by Cirice was nice, given how they last parted, and the chance to stick it to all the Fates and Hades was priceless. A brilliant blend of magic, high fantasy, and epic science fiction -- McCullough's Ravirn books are only getting better and better with each new addition. The use of internet and computer concepts to explain and play with magic is definitely a novel and brilliant idea and the execution is all but flawless. Ravirn is funny, clever, and yet he never comes across as being too powerful for his own good, or even

In the twenty-first century, magic has gone digital. Ravirn is a talented sorcerer, a computer hacker, and umpteenth great-grandson of one of three Fates, who don't like him much and the feeling is rightfully returned by Ravirn. Ravirn has had to deal with some difficult in the not so distant past and then to seriously complicate things, he and his best friend, who is a goblin and a laptop, Necessity, who is
