Author: Maureen O. Betita | Website

Maureen O. Betita lives on the central coast of California, specifically the wondrous Monterey Bay. She writes romantic adventure stories featuring thoughtful heroines, offbeat heroes and settings that range from the Caribbean Sea to alien worlds.

And at the core to every story she writes is a second chance.

In April of 2007, Maureen nearly died. Her heart stopped and only the quick action of her husband allowed her to wake in a hospital bed days later, alive and completely bewildered as to what had happened. The doctors called it sudden cardiac death.

Maureen was fortunate to survive. And she decided to take her second chance at life and dedicate herself to fulfilling her dream of being a published writer.

Available now is The Kraken’s Mirror, the first novel in a contracted series of three set in a mysterious, magical world of swashbuckling and steampunk. It is available through Decadent Publishing and Amazon. The second novel, The Chameleon’s Goggles, will be released by Decadent this fall and the third book, The Pirate Circus, will follow in winter.

In addition, Maureen is the author of the Etwan Chronicles, a series of science fiction novellas published by Decadent. The first two books in the series, The Ship’s Mistress and The Sister’s Story: Sari’s Search are available now.

The Pirate Circus

Bosun Janey knows who and what she is. A pirate. And a damned good one at that. Living a life of excitement, adventure, and sailing the seas of the Kraken’s Caribbean is enough for her. But when the Quill is stuck in dry dock, Janey is left to search for distraction along Tortuga’s waterfront. How does a pirate occupy herself? Certainly not by making friends with a six-year-old boy or mooning after the boy’s father. That’s not how a pirate behaves!

Widower Benjamin Silvestri arrived in Tortuga seeking a fresh start. At first, the pirate haven doesn’t seem like a safe sanctuary for second chances, but life is full of surprises. The sun breathes life into his little boy, and new freedoms help his errant niece embrace her true nature. And then there's Janey. A pirate and most unconventional woman, she stirs feelings in Benjamin that are far from proper—but who’s to say what is proper in Tortuga?

However, before he and Janey can explore the possibilities, Benjamin's son and niece disappear onto the high seas. Together, the couple set out to rescue them—because only a loving father and a cutthroat pirate stand a chance against the dangerous Pirate Circus.

Very few books I have read have started out in such a spectacular way. The story of The Pirates Circus is a fantastic novel full of swashbuckling adventures, vampires, werewolves, time travelers, and the myth and lore of the Caribbean Islands. Each of the characters, Emily, Alan, Charlie, Lee, Janey, and Benjamin, to name a few, are each fantastic fun and highly developed in their attitudes, thoughts, and per

Something Different

“…We women, we know the truth of love and the human heart. He will mourn me, dearest Evangeline. But as this illness steals my time with him, I want to leave him with hope. This dating service you run…when you feel he is ready, find him a woman, Eve. Find him someone different so that he doesn’t look for me in her eyes.

My days are numbered, the drugs ease my pain. Help my Aaron to heal from his.

Yours in spirit, Maria Consuelo Castillo”

He read the letter and slid into the chair at the family meeting. With a shudder, he met his son’s eyes and sighed. They all watched him, waiting. She wanted this? His beloved wife, gone three years? It was a useless gesture, but he wouldn’t deny the attempt. One date, to satisfy Maria. But that was all. He swore it.

The Kraken's Mirror

Captain Alan Silvestri is a man haunted by a strange curse. Good luck is his to command, but it comes at the cost of any place to call home or people to reckon as family. Resigned to die and shunned by all, he is forced to sail every three days, until he begins to dream of a special woman.

Treated by our youth-oriented society as invisible and sexless, Emily Pawes is ready to move on with life. She attends a pirate festival, hoping to recapture the make-believe magic she knew as a young woman. Lucky to win an interesting bit of booty at a brick-a-brac stand, she finds herself transported by the Kraken’s mirror through a magical portal to a land of Hollywood piratitude, where swashbuckling heroes own iPods. With little choice, Emily embraces the madness. Playing pirate has to be safer than falling into the arms of handsome Captain Silvestri, right?

When they meet, sparks fly, passion flares. He needs her to be free, but more than that, he needs her to be whole. Setting sail and uncertain of who actually controls the wheel, they seek ways to defeat his curse of good luck and discover the Kraken’s mirror has plans for them. Will Emily stay in this pirate haven to fight alongside him or will he lose her because of his curse?
