Author: Winfred Cook | Website

Winfred Cook started writing for his own pleasure six years ago, and has subsequently written a number of short stories and three novels--Uncle Otto, Wayfarers and yet unpublished, Ruby.

Winfred is a successful and influential African American hair stylist in San Francisco, working with a broad and diverse group of clients that has included political activist Angela Davis, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and singer Nancy Wilson. Winfred opened his first salon in San Francisco in 1973 and soon after began writing his popular weekly column “Ask Winfred” in the San Francisco Sun Reporter, offering hair care advice and detailing his ""easy care, beautiful hair"" philosophy and techniques. His salon ""Winfred's"" has been a San Francisco landmark for more than thirty years.

Born and raised in a working class St. Louis neighborhood with his two brothers. Winfred’s parents divorced when he was a child. Immediately following high school, he and two friends journeyed to New York City and as with many who came before; the city had a profound impact on his young impressionable mind.

In subsequent years, he lived in Chicago and Los Angeles, and in 1969, landed in San Francisco where he discovered his true home, and now resides in Oakland, CA.

Wayfarers

A life lived in earnest provides one with a moral compass upon which to gauge the parameters of one's inner journey, the source of any lasting fulfillment. Wayfarers gives evidence of the epic miles one may travel when morality transcends the dead-end of mindless dogma and becomes, instead, a conduit to personal happiness.
