A NIGHT OWL REVIEWS BOOK REVIEW | Reviewed by: Chris

Widowed and unable to support herself or her beloved servants, Carrie Hatcher is about to make a leap she cannot come back from.  It seems the only women surviving these hard times are those willing to “accommodate” the soldiers overrunning the town.  When given no choice but to board a wounded Colonel Wesley McEwen, Carrie sees her opportunity and vows to start her new business with him.

At first shocked, the Colonel refuses.  When Carrie proceeds with her plan with another soldier, Wesley puts an immediate stop to her activities and takes her up on her offer, with conditions.  Whatever he wants, where ever he wants it, and she can’t say no.

Wesley, wounded in spirit as much as the flesh, fights his attraction to Carrie.  Carrie, unfamiliar with the passion the Colonel ignites, struggles with her developing feelings.  Can the two of them overcome their own fears and make a life together?

Loved it.  Risqué in that it addressed what must have been a reality in the Civil War era, Bought and Paid For showed the struggle associated with turning to a life of prostitution.  No one ever chose this profession if they could help it.  Wesley rose in my estimation when he pointed out to Carrie that he admired what she was doing because of her reasoning behind her decision.  Wicked and naughty, the relationship between Wesley and Carrie was wonderful.  Wesley was cruel at times, which was unfortunate, but I understood considering the demons he was fighting.  A truly different kind of read, and one I have no hesitation recommending.

Book Blurb for Bought and Paid For

Unable to support herself and her beloved servants, Widow Carrie Hatcher contemplates the unthinkable—offering her services for money. Forced to board wounded Colonel Wesley McEwen in her home, Carrie vows to make the striking Confederate soldier her first “client”.

But Carrie gets more than she bargained for when she agrees to comply with Wesley’s every illicit request for one week. Throughout long, sultry nights, Wesley tutors Carrie in every position, every skill, of her illicit new trade. From dark taboos to pleasurable punishments, Carrie becomes his willing pupil.

Passions inflamed, the couple becomes more scandalously intimate but Carrie realizes she wants to give him far more than just her body. The colonel, however, may be too haunted by his past to risk accepting more than he’s bought and paid for.
