A NIGHT OWL REVIEWS BOOK REVIEW | Reviewed by: Diana Coyle
Cassie Teague wants nothing more than to be a published author. Seeking out the perfect publisher, she spends almost one month preparing her submission in hopes of finally receiving an acceptance letter. As each day passes, she wonders what the outcome of her manuscript is going to be.
After coming home from work one day, where she answers phones and schedules appointments at a local dentist’s office, Cassie sees the familiar envelope that is addressed in her own handwriting and is nervous to see what the response is within the envelope. Since she has waited six months for this reply, she figures she can wait a bit longer. She decides to head over to the local coffee shop where her best friend Gayle works so she will have some moral support finding out her long awaited answer. Opening the envelope and reading the enclosed letter together with Gayle, poor Cassie’s dreams seem to shatter right in front of her. She is rejected yet again. As a matter of fact, this is the thirty-seventh time.
Frustrated and angry that the publisher didn’t see the true potential in her and her manuscript, Cassie tells Gayle that maybe it’s time to finally give up on her dream. Just as she’s telling her best friend this, a customer enters the coffee shop. Overhearing their conversation, he approaches them and introduces himself as David Jameson, Acquisitions Editor at Turnip Press. After briefly reading over her submission, he asks if he can see the finished manuscript immediately. Cassie is so thrilled by his request. Maybe, just maybe, he’s the answer to her prayers of finally becoming the published author that she has only dreamed about being for all these years.
When Cassie gives David the complete manuscript later on that day, what is his honest opinion of it? Does he think that Cassie has what it takes to finally get published? Or does he agree with the other editor from his company and rejects it also?
Ms. West packed this short story with plenty of emotion. I felt terrible for Cassie being rejected thirty-seven times and the author penned Cassie’s emotions so clearly that I felt what she was feeling when she read the rejection letter. When David introduced himself to her and Gayle, I was hoping that he might be able to work with Cassie to maybe polish the manuscript enough to finally get published. I overall enjoyed this storyline and loved how the author threw a few twists and turns into the plot. Ms. West is a new author to me and I look forward to seeing what else she has available for her readers.
