A NIGHT OWL REVIEWS BOOK REVIEW | Reviewed by: Diana Coyle

Sophie Sinora is different than the average fourteen year old.  She is blessed with a telepathic ability that she sometimes finds a bit hindering to say the least.  She is quite lucky though because her two best friends, AJ Dawson and Krysta Richards are gifted in their own way.  AJ has visions of things that are going to happen and Krysta receives visits from dead people.  They all attend school together and have made a pact not to tell anyone of their abilities, including their families, because they know they will be treated like outcasts.
As if ninth grade isn’t hard enough to acclimate to, poor Sophie is very self-conscious and extremely self- doubting of herself.  You see, last year Sophie lost thirty pounds of baby fat and was adjusting to new braces.  Even though it is one year later, she is still trying to adjust to her new body image.  In her mind, she is the same girl she was last year.
One thing is definitely different for her this year.  She has a crush on a boy named Jacob Flushman.  When she tells her two best friends, she doesn’t receive the two responses she was hoping for.  Her reasoning for liking Jacob is because he also lost a bunch of weight.  She feels that he had to be teased about his weight just as much as she was and what two better people were made for each other then?  Or at least this is what Sophie thinks anyway.
As the story progresses, Sophie learns more about herself and her ability.  She even learns more about Jacob too.  In the process of trying to make it through ninth grade, Sophie struggles just like any fourteen year old does to get good grades, have a boyfriend and have fun with her best friends as much as possible.
Does Sophie ever get asked out by Jacob?  Do she and her friends decide to attend the Freshman Formal that everyone is talking about?  Is Jacob her date for the dance?  How does Sophie and her friends deal with their ever changing abilities throughout ninth grade?
I absolutely adored reading this story by Ms. West.  Her voice is extremely unique and fresh.  She immediately transported me into the story from the very first sentence.  I felt as if I was another character watching and interacting with Sophie and all the other characters.  I think that teenagers would love this story because they can relate to quite a bit of issues that Sophie and her friends work

Book Blurb for Sophie's Secret

After shedding 30 pounds of baby fat, chubby Sophie Sinora has grown into a pretty, but insecure, teen in bloom. To make her life more complicated, Sophie can sometimes read minds. Sophie's BFFs, AJ and Krysta, are also 'gifted' with paranormal abilities. Keeping their gifts secret proves difficult, as their powers are strengthening, making them feel more and more like freaks. When Sophie falls for Jacob, she hopes he'll ask her out to the Freshman Formal. But when she's forced to cheat and lie for him, she wonders how far she'll have to go to make him like her. Add to her growing list of problems - her teacher's suicidal thoughts, a locker bully who wants to kick her butt, the totally hot school flirt who won't stop teasing her, her pregnant sister who boots Sophie out of her room, and the growing tension between Sophie and her best friends. Sophie's got issues. Hopefully, she can fix them in time to save her teacher's life and her social life.
