Crown of Crystal Flame by C.L. Wilson is the thrilling conclusion to the Tairen Soul series that defied its author’s attempts to hold it down to a trilogy. The ultimate showdown between Elysetta Baristani and her nemesis Vadim Maur has finally arrived but Elysetta and Rain still have not been able to complete their mating bond and he is struggling against his inescapable descent into madness. The divisions among those who will need to work together to defeat the overwhelming army that the mages have amassed seem insurmountable. Elysetta is handicapped by her four Mage Marks and resisting the pull to use Azrahn is difficult when those around her are threatened. The insiduous campaign by the Primages continues to suborn key figures and only a concerted effort by all who fight for the Light will give the allies a chance at preventing enslavement of all of them.
A wonderful conclusion to the enthralling series which has introduced so many wonderful characters, especially those who comprise the fascinating tairen pride. The unabashedly romantic relationships between the powerful beings that people this series are inspiring while the evil that is described is chilling to the extreme. It is easy to understand the gradual progression that leads the naive Elysetta on her remarkble journey to become the beloved of the Tairen Soul while fighting against the terrifying predictions that show her as the downfall of all peoples who are good and righteous. An interesting reflection of the necessity for tolerance and the way that time alters perceptions. There are still a few loose ends that will hopefully demand their own stories in the future.
