A NIGHT OWL REVIEWS BOOK REVIEW | Reviewed by: ELF

First Family is a beautiful children’s book written by Deborah Hopkinson for readers aged 4-7 years, excellently illustrated by AG Ford.  A fascinating overview of the newest president, Barack Obama, and his lovely wife Michelle, children Malia and Sasha, as they move into the White House and put their own individual imprint upon the historic building which serves as a museum with many items of historic significance, an office for the Chief Executive of the United States, and a home for the First Family (including First Grandmother Marian Robinson and First Dog Bo).  A typical day is described and emphasis is placed upon the family values and healthy habits that are characteristic of the Obama family.  Fascinating facts are included about the “People’s House” as the White House is also called including the amazing concept that there are 35 bathrooms and a bowling alley and there is a vegetable garden with more than 50 kinds of vegetables that has occasionally been weeded by the President himself!

An entertaining book for people of all ages that gives a clear picture of the White House and its newest inhabitants.  The illustrations give a wonderful feel for the history and richness of heritage contained within the hallowed walls of this building and the text allows the reader to get an overview of the Obama family and its values.  The portraits of the family are not exact depictions but instead give a glimpse of the warmth and charisma underlying the fascinating people who have been elected the leaders of our country.  This is an entertaining addition to a young reader’s library.

At work, at play, at home, in the White House.

The White House is a museum, the office of the chief executive, a gathering place for leaders and visitors from around the globe, and it is also a home for one special family--the First Family.

This book follows a day in the life of the Obama family: President Barack, First Lady Michelle, First Daughters Malia and Sasha, and even First Pup Bo. From moving in on inauguration day to making important decisions, hosting state dinners, planting a garden, exploring the historic house, and leading around the Secret Service, the First Family is very busy.
