A NIGHT OWL REVIEWS BOOK REVIEW | Reviewed by: ELF

Moon Burning by Lucy Monroe explores the antipathy between two types of Chrechte shapeshifters, the Faol (wolves) and the Ean (ravens). Sabrine, an Ean warrior, resorts to subterfuge in order to gain access to the Donegal clan that she suspects of having stolen the precious artifact of the Ean, a talisman essential in their coming-of-age ceremonies that allows them to access their Chrechte gifts. Barr, acting laird and Chrechte pack leader for the Donegal clan, is cautiously navigating his way through the complicated relationships of his temporarily adopted clan which has traditionally kept many of its members subjugated to the whims of the previous laird. His inexplicable attraction to Sabrine is tempered by his knowledge that she is hiding something from all of them. She may be unable to surmount her ingrained distrust of all those who have traditionally persecuted and murdered her people in order to see the gift that is available for her. But observing Barr’s actions as he grooms the new laird for his position may force her to consider making new alliances both personally and for her people.

This is an imaginative story that explores the complex relationship among the Chrechte clans who have found a way to intermingle with humans. Several interesting relationships are depicted with sizzling romances that develop as trust is slowly established. It is a little difficult to understand the structure of the clans and the hierarchy between humans and the Chrechte as well as the different rituals observed by the different strata of society, but that may be better delineated in previous novels in the series.
