A NIGHT OWL REVIEWS BOOK REVIEW | Reviewed by: KatieSeely

Princess Violetta’s father, the King of Northland, has decided she is of age to marry. To find her a husband, the King invites all of the knights in the kingdom to compete and the winner will marry his only daughter. Feeling betrayed by her father, Violetta believes she will never find true love.

Prince Colin Drake, disguised as a fop, has been sent to spy on the Northland by his father. His mission is to collect intelligence on the enemy kingdom and lose the competition, but when he meets the redheaded Princess Violetta, he decides to vie for her heart. Unfortunately, he must win her heart while posing as another person. Will the princess ever believe his feelings are real when she learns the truth?

Winning Violetta is a twist on a fairy tale crossed with Robin Hood, where Princess Violetta is the archery expert. Honestly, I am a sucker for stories like this, not ever outgrowing my love of fairy tales. What girl doesn’t love a story of a prince winning the heart of his ladylove, especially with the help of fairy godsisters? I found the fairy godsisters a nice touch to the story and setting the stage for this grown-up fairy tale.

I found the characterization of Violetta and Colin okay. Although I liked Violetta at the beginning, there is a chapter in the middle of this short story where she goes off the deep end and I lost my love for her. On the other hand, Colin’s character is consistent, but I was confused as to the object of why he was sent to spy on the neighboring kingdom. Colin’s alpha male personality works well into the story and he comes off as being the knight in shining armor.

Winning Violetta is an amusing fairy tale for grown-ups and I recommend this short story to all of those readers that never gave up the dream of the happily-ever-after fairy tale.

Book Blurb for Winning Violetta

Princess Violetta’s dreams of a handsome knight winning her heart die when she becomes the prize in a joust. Accidentally shooting one of the competitors with an arrow, she can’t believe the effeminate-looking knight is also the most handsome man she’s ever seen.

Prince Colin hates his secret mission and his disguise as an outrageous peacock. The last thing he expects to find is a beautiful, passionate princess. He spends his days fighting for her hand in the joust, and the nights fighting for her love.

Hungering for his kisses and caresses, should Violetta surrender to his seduction?

When Colin’s mission turns from spy to love, should he reveal his true identity at the risk of losing his life?

Will Violetta’s two well-meaning, but hapless faery god sisters help the couple or cause utter chaos?
