A NIGHT OWL REVIEWS BOOK REVIEW | Reviewed by: Shannschoice
When Marissa Bennett was a senior in high school, she had a few hot months with college freshman Conner Doyle. She was absolutely in love with him and utterly destroyed when he moved back to Chicago without a word to her. Fast forward ten years and we have Conner Doyle back in Hopeful, Ohio as a sheriff who left Chicago claiming burnout as an undercover narcotics cop and Marissa slinking home after a horrible divorce leaves her broke and broken. Both of them run back to the one place they are hoping can heal them. The path to happiness, for both of them, isn't easy. Marissa has such self-esteem issues that she hides behind them like a fortress wall. Even while she sits in her divorce group, she doesn't seem to want to let go of that wall, even when she says she does. Conner has his own issues to overcome. He's torn up about not being able to save a troubled youth back in Chicago and can't seem to let the feelings of self-doubt go. He feels like a failure because he ran away from Chicago, but he also knows that he runs away when he can't deal with a situation (which is what he did when he left Marissa the way he did in college). The story was enjoyable, even if the characters did tend to be a bit on the whiny side. The secondary cast with Marissa and Conner's family were very entertaining and had me wishing we spent a little bit more time with them...together. An easy read, enjoyable read that was the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
