A NIGHT OWL REVIEWS BOOK REVIEW | Reviewed by: Terri
Irena became a Guardian as an escaped slave from Rome when she sacrificed herself to save the slaves she escaped with. Alejandro became a Guardian centuries later when he died during the Spanish Inquisition protecting his family. Irena’s gift is working metals while Alejandro’s is fire. Irena teaches young Guardians how to wheel swords except things were a little more intense concerning Alejandro. Feeling that were more than they should be between a mentor and her student came quickly and intensely on both sides. When Irena is faced with dealing with a demon for Alejandro’s life, she freely gives herself to the demon causing a split between her and Alejandro for the past 400 years. Now, they’re working together and the sparks are flying. Can they get past the shame of this bargain and find the love that was promised?
Central to the mission is Deacon, a vampire from Europe. His vampire community has been taken from him and his two women he uses for blood are being held hostage. Unless he gives information to the new leader, they will be killed. Deacon is torn between the two women he cares about and his friends in the Guardians. Can he make the right choices fast enough or will he betray those who are trying to help him?
A prophesy is coming to past. No one is sure what will happen if it does or how to stop it. All that is known is human free will must be preserved and no one is above the mission, not even Michael, the doyen.
This book starts with intense action and ends the same way. Demons, guardians, vampires and humans are all intertwined and sometimes even working towards the same goal but with death and deception blurring who is really do what, loosing sight of that goal can be easy. Can a demon be trusted to be the leading political figure supporting Special Investigations? Even one who has been doing good for 2000 years? Could he really have another agenda that included killing his human wife?
Relationships abound. Irena and Alejandro have to figure out how to work together and stop baiting each other. The problem is, what happens when they do? Deacon cares more about the Guardian they freed in Rome than he should. Could this cause problems concerning the information that he needs to give to the new head of his vampires? Even Michael seems a bit distracted with one of the human police officers working with them. He’s the one who turns people into Guardians and really shouldn’t be distracted as he is also their leader. Can there be a happy ending to all of these budding romances? It’s highly doubtful.
This book is part of a series. While it can be read without having read the previous Guardian novels, it would be enjoyed more if you have read them. Many of the characters from the previous books are in this one and at least one situation that greatly influences the happenings in this book took place in the previous book.
I enjoy this series for several reasons.
The characters are strong. The women have a sense of their worth and abilities. The men are willing to bend but not break. All of the characters determination make them interesting.
The world that Ms Brook has developed is well thought out and complex. In each book, a little background is given as to how the Guardians came about. In simple terms, it’s a war against good and evil but as everyone knows there are gray areas. It’s the gray areas that make everything so much fun.
And there are touches of humor along with all the fighting.
This book leaves me wanting more and curious as to what next. There’s an unexpected twist that will impact all of the Guardians. But we’ll have to wait until the summer of 2010 to find out how.
