A NIGHT OWL REVIEWS BOOK REVIEW | Reviewed by: Valerie

The Sevenfold Spell is the story of Sleeping Beauty told from the spinner’s perspective. The book delves into the lives of those most affected by the curse put on Sleeping Beauty, the people who make their livelihoods from spinning cloth and thread and those that have very little resources when disaster strikes.

Our heroine, Talia, does not seem to be much of a heroine at the start of the book. She is just a woman, who struggles in the face of adversity like so many others. She makes choices, some good and some bad. Though she loves Willard she also realizes she must find some way to make a way for herself when they are unable to marry. The reader follows her on her journey and can easily both empathize and sympathize with Talia who seems to be cursed herself.

Our hero Will, also seems to be not much of a hero in the beginning, though he loves Talia he will not disobey his father to marry her. Eventually, Will leaves their small village to become a monk. In the midst of his departure, Talia must find a way to deal with the choices she’s made and carve out a bit of happiness. Though the story focuses primarily on Talia, and is told from Talia’s point of view, the reader can’t help but fall a bit in love with Will too.

The tale is an amazing, imaginative tale that enraptures the reader and tells the intriguing story of what happens to all the other people in a fairy tale. It is a novella that is well worth the read.

Book Blurb for The Sevenfold Spell

Have you ever wondered what happens to the other people in the fairy tale?

Things look grim for Talia and her mother. By royal proclamation, the constables and those annoying "good" fairies have taken away their livelihood by confiscating their spinning wheel. Something to do with a curse on the princess, they said.

Not every young lady has a fairy godmother rushing to her rescue.

Without the promise of an income from spinning, Talia's prospects for marriage disappear, and she and her mother face destitution. Past caring about breaking an arbitrary and cruel law, rebellious Talia determines to build a new spinning wheel, the only one in the nation-which plays right into the evil fairy's diabolical plan. Talia discovers that finding a happy ending requires sacrifice. But is it a sacrifice she's willing to make?
