Who knew that one night of rebellion would cause a 12 year self imposed exile to stay alive. Elizabeth had no idea that one night in which she let her hair down and try to be a normal 16 year old could go so wrong. Elizabeth was on her way to becoming her mother's protege. Her life had been planned since the day of conception. Her mother went to a sperm bank and got artificially inseminated with Elizabeth being the end product. Elizabeth was already going into college at the age of 16. Her IQ was off the charts. Her life was planned and organized by her mother. She was told what to eat, what to wear, and acceptable places for her to go.
Elizabeth breaks free while her mother is speaking at a convention over the weekend. She goes to the mall, and meets Julie, a girl she used to go to school with. Julie takes her shopping for her first pair of jeans. The only thing she has to do is produce a couple of fake ID's for herself and Julie so they can have a night on the town at this hot new club Warehouse 12. Once there she and Julie meet a couple of guys with suspected ties to the Russian mob, Alex Gurevich and Ilya Volkov. Here things get crazy, Alex takes the girls to his house on the beach with Ilya following behind after he finishes some business at the club. Elizabeth gets sick, and while in the bathroom hears men talking in Russian to Alex. Things quickly escalate and Alex and Julie are shot and killed execution style, signature mob hit.
Elizabeth is the only witness and now has to go into protective custody to testify against the Russian mob. Sounds simple enough, however the mob gets to someone on the inside. While at the safe house her protectors get shot and killed. Thus begins Elizabeth's life on the run. Will she finally be able to settle down and call someplace home or will she constantly have to look over her shoulder. You need to read the book to find out.
Nora Roberts has done it again with a great story. I couldn't put it down. That is the only problem I have with any of her books. I get so engrossed in the story that when it's over I find myself trying to figure out where the time has gone. This is definitely one that I will read over and over again. Great job once again.
Daughter of a controlling mother, Elizabeth finally let loose one night, drinking at a nightclub and allowing a strange man’s seductive Russian accent lure her to a house on Lake Shore Drive. The events that followed changed her life forever.
Twelve years later, the woman known as Abigail Lowery lives on the outskirts of a small town in the Ozarks. A freelance programmer, she designs sophisticated security systems—and supplements her own security with a fierce dog and an assortment of firearms. She keeps to herself, saying little, revealing nothing. But Abigail’s reserve only intrigues police chief Brooks Gleason. Her logical mind, her secretive nature, and her unromantic viewpoints leave him fascinated but frustrated. He suspects that Abigail needs protection from something—and that her elaborate defenses hide a story that must be revealed.
With a quirky, unforgettable heroine and a pulse-pounding plotline, Nora Roberts presents a riveting new read that cements her place as today’s most reliably entertaining thriller
author—and will leave people hungering for more.
