“Inhale” is the mesmerizing new novel by Kendall Grey, introducing the ‘Just Breathe’ series. Dr. Zoe Morgan is a dedicated member of the Cetacean Research Network (CRN) that is studying whales around the world. She has a special affinity for and wrenching guilt towards a particular humpback whale whom she calls Lily but she devotes her life to tagging and studying the fascinating creatures. Musician Gavin Cassidy has just been existing ever since the tragic loss that caused him to question his suitability to be a Sentinel, despite his ability to pass through the Veil and alter events in the Dreaming. He is drawn to the Wyldling Zoe who has no idea that the dream world she enters when she sleeps has correlation to reality but gradually learns that it is populated by creatures representing the Elements of Fyre, Waeter, Aer and Erthe who are in conflict with each other. Gavin’s mentor, the Sentinel Yileen, is a wise aboriginal who is under attack both in the Dreaming and in Realis (the real world) and he struggles to convince his protege that he will be capable of facing the challenges of being a Sentinel if only Gavin can learn how to access all of his talents. Zoe and Gavin come from two different worlds but gradually discover that they will need to work together to defeat the mass attack planned for the Dreaming. Unfortunately, events conspire against the pair continuing to act on the passion and attraction that they inspire in one another and their romance may be over just as abruptly as it began.
The author is adept at creating vivid imagery that conjures up the various locales for her tale. This fast-moving introduction to a fantastical world with its parallels to the real world interspersed with remarkable word portraits that display the passion and dedication displayed by cetacean researchers makes a fascinating read. The secondary characters are a bit two dimensional but there is plenty of fodder for sequels and one can’t help but enjoy being plunged into the Dreaming along with the other intriguing characters. Fortunately, the sequel to this entertaining read should be available relatively quickly and one can also feel virtuous knowing that your purchase will support whale education.
Strangers in reality, inseparable in dreams...
After years of suffocating under her boss's scrutiny, whale biologist Zoe Morgan finally lands a job as director of a tagging project in Hervey Bay, Australia. Success Down Under all but guarantees her the promotion of a lifetime, and Zoe won't let anything--or anyone--stand in her way. Not the whale voices she suddenly hears in her head, not the ex who won't take no for an answer, and especially not the gorgeous figment of her imagination who keeps saving her from the fiery hell of her dreams.
Gavin Cassidy hasn't been called to help a human Wyldling in over a year, which is fine by him. Still blaming himself for the death of his partner, he keeps the guilt at bay by indulging in every excess his rock star persona affords. That is, until he's summoned to protect Zoe from hungry Fyre Elementals and learns his new charge is the key to restoring order in the dying Dreaming. He never expects to fall for the feisty Dr. Morgan...nor does he realize he may have to sacrifice the woman he loves to save an entire country.
