8 Sensual Foods In Romance Books - Pamela Q. Fernandes
We’ve all heard it, certain foods are wonderful aphrodisiacs. Talk about hot meals and revving up those engines. Yet, in romance books, you’ll find food takes on a sensual role. If seduction is on the menu, then you’ll find it helpful to serve up the following in addition to the candles and the music.
You can’t go wrong with chocolate. Cocoa naturally contains phenylethylamine and tryptophan. The first is released by the brain when we fall in love. Tryptophan produces serotonin which makes us feel happy. Eating more chocolate can improve mood and increase arousal. The Chocolate Cure by Roxanne Snopek from her Love at the Chocolate Shop Series features all the chocolate goodness that comes with romance. Maddie Cash’s New Year resolution is to go off chocolate and men. But when a hunky bush pilot, Mick turns on the charm, she’s in danger of forgetting all her best intentions… on chocolate… on meddling… and especially on men.
Oysters contain amino acids, the stuff that makes up sex hormones. They’re known to increase fertility. There’s a lot of work to eating oysters I admit, but it’s not a smelly affair. A little tobacco sauce and a zing of lime can make them delicious. That’s exactly what Fiona Clutterbuck finds out in The Oyster Catcher when her fiancé abandons her at the altar. Crashing the honeymoon camper van, she finds herself in the middle of nowhere on the west coast of Ireland with only the clothes she’s stood up in. So, if she’s not Mrs. Brian Goodchild anymore, who is she? One thing she does know, she can’t go home. What Fi wants is to hide away, and where better? She takes a job on an oyster farm despite being terrified of water and her new boss, the wild and unpredictable Sean Thornton. As she comes out of her own shell, she finds love among the oyster beds.
These perfect little heart shaped fruits were considered a symbol of Venus in ancient Rome. They are loaded with Vitamin C. Vitamin C is necessary for the chemicals in the brain which increases libido and serotonin. Strawberry Wine by Darly Jamison is all about love and strawberries. Addison Monroe was eighteen when she fell for Jake Grady, a college student working on her family’s farm for the summer. With his sapphire eyes and killer smile, Jake could have had any girl in Lakeside, Georgia. But he wanted Addy, and for those brief, wonderful months—before circumstances drove them irrevocably apart—they belonged to each other.
Ten years later, memories of that long-ago summer and wine-flavored kisses are hard to shake. On a return visit to Lakeside, Addy crosses paths with Jake again and soon finds herself at an unexpected crossroads. So much has changed, and Addy has chosen another route. And the magic of first love can never be rekindled...can it?
Considered one of the most expensive ingredients in the world. I honestly don’t get truffles. While I’m not a fan, truffles are considered a highly sensual aphrodisiac. Apparently, its all in the aroma. The scent of a truffle is very similar to a male pheromone. Jean-Anthelme Brillat- Savarin quotes, “Truffle. As soon as the word is spoken, it awakens lustful and erotic memories among the skirt-wearing sex and erotic and lustful memories among the beard-wearing sex. This honorable parallelism comes not only from the fact that this esteemed tuber is delicious, but also because it is still believed to bring about potency, the exercise of which brings sweet pleasure.” Ahem, okay. In Truffles by the Sea, a Carol Award Finalist, truffle lover Gaby Flores moves to a seaside loft, takes on a new motto ~ Be gullible no more! ~ and begins to rebuild her flower store while searching for Mr. Right. But when a lawsuit, an eviction notice, quirky neighbors, and a kayaking trip from the dark side invade her beachy world, will her chocolate-loving ways be enough?
Ooh! More sensual fruit. Cherries contain potassium, vitamin C, and anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are antioxidants that help maintain a healthy drive and that color is the color of love. In Montana Cherries, Dani Wilde had no choice but to abandon her dreams. She left Columbia University and returned to her family’s Montana cherry farm, intent on being a maternal figure to her brothers. Now the kids are grown, and it’s finally her time to fly. Her sights are on New York City, and nothing will stop her—not even an old flame with gorgeous green eyes.
Celebrity photographer Ben Denton hasn’t seen Montana in years—and hasn’t spoken to Dani since “that night” so long ago. The orchard is the only place that’s ever felt like home. As the Wilde family gathers for the yearly cherry harvest and Dani struggles to figure out what she really wants in life, she discovers the shocking truth about her own mother—and learns that following her heart may lead her to her dreams after all.
If people say whipped cream has no aphrodisiac qualities, they’re partially right. But how many romance books have whipped cream or ice cream in their steamy scenes. Tons of them. Take Helen Hoang’s book, The Kiss Quotient where just a kiss and the flavor of ice cream sends Stella, an econometrician on the Autism spectrum into a tailspin.
Hippocrates used to prescribe honey for sexual vigor. Honey contains boron, which helps regulate hormone levels and nitric oxide. Why is this important? It increases blood flow during arousal. In Farm Fresh Romance, Sweetened with Honey, Gabriel Rubachuk returns to Galena Landing, Idaho, once the setting of a charmed life before an accident killed his pregnant wife.
Beekeeper Sierra Riehl has spent three years helping to keep Gabe’s health food store afloat while he worked with orphans in Romania. Now he’s back, but it looks like he might bolt. Can she hold him still long enough to spark a romance? Is new love sweet enough to overcome the pain of the past and the uncertainty of the future?
Alcohol always knocks down our walls. Red wine improves blood flow and that improves arousal. It also contains compounds that replicate human pheromones. Theobromine, in red wine, is a stimulant, especially for women. Choosing wines with licorice and cherries will definitely get women in the mood. It’s a perfect storm in a glass for seduction. Ask Frankie, from Autumn in the Vineyard. Frankie Baudouin has a hundred reasons not to trust Nate DeLuca. First, he’s a DeLuca. Second, he kissed her—in front of the entire town—and then never called. Oh, and he’s after her land. For Nate, Sorrento Ranch is more than just soil and grape vines; it was his father’s dream—a dream Nate is determined to make a reality. So when he finds himself forced to cohabitate with a hot-headed, irrational, and incredibly gorgeous Baudouin, Nate is surprised to discover that chaos could be so much fun—especially when she sleeps in nothing but lace and makes wine!
That’s my list of sensual foods. I know there are many more; asparagus, figs, pomegranates, and ginger! You could create a whole naughty list of foods that will send your blood pressure skyrocketing.
If you’re planning dinner for a date consider these and tell us how it turned out for you. Or tell us what you serve up when you’re getting someone in the mood. We’d love to know.
