Maggie Wells Takes on A Little Battle of the Sexes in Love Game #LettersFromtheAuthors #BookGiveaway
When I set out to write the book that would become Love Game, I had one thought in mind—I wanted to create a strong, confident heroine who didn’t need a weapon or magic skills to kick butt. Don’t get me wrong, I love a woman who can wield a weapon. I dream of bullet-repelling bracelets, swinging a broadsword, and piloting my own invisible plane. Who doesn’t? But I wanted to write something a little more grounded in the everyday. I know so many women who are heroine-level awesome, and I wanted to celebrate that. Kate Snyder is a woman who knows exactly who she is and what she can do.
Now, I did make her an athlete. An exceptional athlete, even. Why? Because I wanted to set my story in a place where a woman has both feet planted firmly in a traditionally masculine arena and is still a superstar. Women like the Williams sisters, Danica Patrick, Ronda Rousey, or Mia Hamm. Women who kick ass, and don’t bother taking names because they don’t have time. They’re too busy winning at life.
Then, because I am a sucker for proud-man-sees-the-light stories, I introduced her to a man who saw exactly how incredible she is, and loves her for it.
As I was writing the story, what started out as a fun little battle of the sexes turned into something more for me. It turned into a celebration of feminine power. Love Game features strong female friendships that lack competition, but run strong on affectionate ribbing and unwavering support.
It also stars characters who are past the first blush of youth and comfortable in their own skin. This level of self-acceptance not only leads to some incredibly steamy encounters, but also the depth of feeling that comes with knowing one’s strengths and weaknesses. Both Kate and Danny have been through their ups and downs and make no apologies for their pasts. These are people who look ahead, not behind.
Love Game may be a slightly different sort of romance, but I think (I hope!) it has something that will speak to any reader.
Now, go out there and show the world what a champion you are!
