Equilibrium

Superpowered Love, #1

Equilibrium by Katey Hawthorne is the second book I’ve read by this author and I have to say, I’m really enjoying her books so far. I like her creative storytelling ability and world building skills that seem to draw me into her novels like honey to a bee. She also has an interesting quality of sweetness to her writing that I appreciate, and her characters are very unique and fun to read about.

Ever since Hansen Marks spotted Sam MacLeod catching the toaster on fire in the cafeteria, he knew his life would change forever. Both men have special, secret supernatural abilities and they immediately bond over the burned toaster. They quickly become immediate friends and almost inseparable. Much to Hansen’s dismay, Sam is always surrounded by girls and he’s had to keep his attraction for his best friend a secret because he doesn’t want to ruin the special bond they have together. But, when Sam accidentally loses control of his powers in public, the two men grown even closer and their deep attraction and feelings toward each other come to a head. Will they be able to trust in each other and allow these feelings to blossom between them or will fear keep them from obtaining their happy ending together?

Both heroes, Hansen and Sam, were interesting and very likeable characters in their own right. Since we see the world though Hansen’s eyes, we are a little limited on some facts, but since he’s such a wacky and fun character, I really enjoyed reading his point of view. Ms. Hawthorne really makes her characters live and breathe off of the written page. They are both charming, appealing heroes who fight their own demons, as well as support each other and their problems. I loved the open communication they had between them, and really felt the camaraderie and the respect they had for each other.

While the chemistry between Hansen and Sam sizzles throughout the novel, there is also an interesting plot going on that really drew me into the storyline. I will admit, there were a few things I didn’t understand and was puzzled about when it came to their lingo and a few other things, but it wasn’t enough to really take away from the story itself. I realize this is the first book in the series, and I figure all of my questions will be answered in the future.

If you are looking for a fast-paced, sexy and fun read, Equilibrium is definitely the book for you. I thought the best-friends-to-lovers and the gay-for-you theme really worked in this book. Anyone who is a fan of these types of themes will really enjoy this story. I’m looking forward to reading more by Ms. Hawthorne and her amazing characters in the future.

Book Blurb for Equilibrium

Econ student Hansen Marks has been hot for Sam MacLeod since they first bonded over their secret superpowers--literally hot, since Hansen can produce fire from thin air. But soccer star Sam was always covered in girls, so Hansen kept his attraction in the closet and convinced himself that "best friends" was better than nothing.

When Sam's electrical powers freak out in public, Hansen has a sinking feeling they've been spotted by unfriendly eyes. While dealing with the fallout, Sam's emotional dependency on Hansen forces their mutual attraction to the surface. Even after they give in, Hansen is afraid to admit he's in love. Sam doesn't really like guys, he's just feeling vulnerable...right?

Just as their nights are heating up, it becomes clear Sam's electrical explosion was seen, and now someone has it in for both of them. They'll have to save each other, both from the haters and from their own fears, if they want to maintain equilibrium.
