Wolf Rising

SWAT, #8

Clearly, Paige Tyler still has a lot in store for her “SWAT: Special Wolf Alpha Team” series. On each installments, the author doles out - for want of a better word - crumbs of information, painting her werewolf-verse a few shade of colors at a time; and let’s just just say the picture is far from finished. But before going further, I would like to underscore that - as wont to happen with series with numerous recurring characters (that kept increasing) and new development found with each new installments - it is recommended to read this series in chronological order. So, if you haven’t, back-track and grab the previous seven novels prior to read this one!

The ball game between the pack and the hunters were amped-up in “Wolf Rising,” following the sequence of incidents that lead to some face-off on the heel of a major revelation of who had been selling the team out. The hero taking the spotlight here was Officer Jayden Brooks; the biggest werewolf of the pack (fans of the series would remember him as the werewolf who often tasked to stop opponent’s vehicle as in bodily ramp it to a stop) and one of my favorite team member. On top of dealing with the hunters, the story also had Brooks busy with drug task force, dealt with issue that plagued his best-friend slash packmate, and - of course - finding The One. It’s no surprise that the drug case was somehow connected with his “The One,” her being a teacher in school located smack in the middle of gangs zone.

This entry is a fast-paced story that had me captivated with so many issues on hand and so little time to have them all solved. First and foremost was unusual process Selena - Brooks’ mate - gone through. This took a good chunk of pages and more often pivoted into holy-moly-fan-oneself vigorous steamy. Quite frankly, it got me conflicted as part of me wish Brooks was more apt than shown here (did I mention he’s among my favorites?) yet I couldn’t agree more how him being distracted portrayed the human side of Brooks that made him more ...approachable.

Selena character herself was already badass even prior to her genetic flip. I find her POV of the overall situation amusing, heartbreaking, and maddening at the same time. Not that I begrudge Brooks and Selena their happy beginning, but the instant attachment they developed to each other was of as much concern as the acceptance of the rapid change process. Yet, they seemed so easily - and quickly - dismissed in the name of love, not carefully courted as we first read on earlier installments of the series.

As for the other two subjects in this book, I’m on the fence for the way they handled. The whodunit were practically thrown left and right for our protagonists to sniff it under their nose! It’s so frustrating how oblivious they were not to scent the bad guys sooner, and - despite the intention to clear off the path for the upcoming entry - how the pack’s having loose ends hanging.

All things considered, this book is a brilliant and action-packed read. However, the time sequence felt a tad choppy and character development for the MCs rushed. Of course I’m still going to look forward to what the author plot for SWAT members and their mates on the next books. Considering the still tall number of unattached werewolves on the team, I think it’ll be a while for the guys to face the ultimate fray and fully eliminate the threat. At least I hope it will.
