Merely a Marriage

Author Jo Beverly has been a long-time favorite of mine. So, I was very excited to run across this book, the latest installment in her award-winning Regency romances. I was not disappointed in the least. While the story starts off a little slow, it very rapidly picks up pace and gets infinitely more interesting. I loved getting to know Lady Ariana Boxstall and her brother, Norris. These two are wildly passionate about things and people they care about, but also somewhat reckless. I loved this novel, and it is going right to the top of my favorites pile! There’s plenty of mystery, plenty of romance, and just enough heat to spice it up. Ms. Beverly has written another hit!

England is in mourning. The sudden death of Princess Charlotte in childbirth has left the nation reeling. Everyone has death on their minds, including Lady Ariana Boxstall. While she is not a high society member, she is of noble blood and pure of spirit. What if, god forbid, her dear brother Norris were to die, leaving her beloved home in dire straits? So, she latches on a plan. Norris must marry with all expediency. Norris, though, has plans of his own. He proposes a wager. Ariana must marry first, and then Norris will get married. And let the craziness begin. A jilted suitor has a sinister plan; a man from Ariana’s past comes back, shocking her and reminding her why she left town originally. He broke her heart. But when the dashing Earl of Kynaston sees Ariana as she is now, he is determined not to lose his heart to her. Just as she is determined not to lose her heart to him, the threats of another threaten to ruin everything Ariana has worked for. Can she convince Kynaston of her intentions, and her heart? Or after all, is it really merely a marriage after all?

Although she realizes she risks a lifetime in a loveless marriage, for the sake of her family, Ariana accepts his challenge.

When the Earl of Kynaston met Ariana eight years ago, he broke her heart. Since then, his own heart has been broken, and he’s sworn off love...until he sees Ariana all grown-up and his resolve is threatened.

Could Ariana’s bargain with Norris actually lead her to happiness? With real love on the line, she must win over the one man who refuses to be had.
