Katrina Sinclair is attempting to establish a new life for herself by becoming a modiste. The sudden death of her husband left a taint on her name, and Katrina is grateful for the help she has received from Lord Coulton and his daughter. By designing a wardrobe for her childhood friend, now marchioness Julia Dupont, Katrina hopes to impress the upper classes and gain new clientele. However, she is taken aback when Julia insists that Katrina be the one to model the clothes, by impersonating her at a house party! Their similar appearances allowed this to work as children, but Katrina doubts she will be able to trick so many of Julia’s acquaintances, especially when Julia’s former flame Leo Kincade arrives!
Leo Kincade is immediately suspicious of the woman impersonating Julia Dupont. He is on a mission to uncover the thief who has been robbing guests at various house parties and helping to fund Napolean’s cause. Despite his suspicions, Leo cannot help the attraction he feels for the imposter. His feelings for her are much stronger than anything he felt for Julia. But the more he gets to know her, the more he worries that she is in over her head in trouble.
The Perfect Imposter is a page-turner! I couldn’t put it down! The mystery surrounding the thieves and Julia’s motives gave the novel a quick pace. Soliman’s characters are interesting and well developed. The different narrative perspectives allow the reader to really understand the characters and work well with the mystery elements of the novel. The reader is given enough information to gather clues, but still not enough to discern the truth early on in the novel. I particularly liked the political elements of the novel. They fell into place well with the romantic plot. The relationships between all the characters are realistic and complex. All of these aspects make The Perfect Imposter a fantastic read!
