Journey in Time

Knights in Time, #2

Alex's soul is several hundred years old. A casualty of a medieval war, he roved the earth for centuries as a ghost before getting another chance at life. Passionate about music, he becomes a sought-after music producer. Haunted by memories, he eschews long-term relationships and takes solace in his playboy lifestyle.

Enter Shakira, an exotic beauty, successful attorney, and musician. One view of her playing her guitar and Alex is smitten. When he's faced with an unwarranted, sexual-harassment suit, he hires her only to learn Shakira is a by-the-books woman who refuses to mix business with pleasure. Refusing to give up, Alex eventually convinces her to spend the weekend with him at his rural cottage.

While riding horses on his property, they veer off the path and into a strange storm. After an odd feeling of weightlessness, they discover they've been transported back to the thirteen hundreds. Alex is recognized as his former self and is soon swept up into the politics of the day. Shakira becomes his unlucky female companion.

Needing to protect her, Alex takes her to his castle and declares she's his mistress. Shakira despises becoming dependent on him, but as a single woman in medieval England, she has few choices. While Alex is tending his responsibilities, Shakira, with the king's blessing, is taken by a sadistic businessman.

After she fights off the brutal businessman's advances, Alex saves her. But the problem remains: until she is married, she is vulnerable. Unable to be at her side constantly, Alex decides to marry her.

Shakira doesn't want his charity, but is in love with Alex and is elated by the idea of marrying him. Seeing the logic of it, she agrees and they are wed. Amid the chaos of ongoing wars and the medieval treatment of women, Alex and Shakira repeatedly return to the spot where they'd been transported hoping to be sent back to modern times. Their efforts are for naught and they remain.

While Alex is gone on business, Shakira, believing he'd only married her to protect her and that their union could lead to his fighting in the war, decides to let him out of their marriage by disappearing. Her only viable option is to become a nun. On her way to the abby, she's caught in a storm and she is taken forward in time.

Since I have given much of the plot in the book already, I'll stop here. Suffice to say Alex and Shakira's many centuries of time difference causes problems for their relationship. Plus Alex isn't happy with the fact she left.

Add to the mix that Alex is heading into war while Shakira is dealing with fallout from her conservative firm and there is plenty of tension.

Will Alex ever make it back, and if he does, can there relationship be reconciled?

Journey in Time is beautifully written and engaging. Ms. Karlsen did a great job of keeping tension throughout. I connected with both Alex and Shakira. The transition into medieval times was interesting and well-researched. This was one of the most meaty romances I've read in a while. Excellent job!
