Saddled and Spurred

A Blacktop Cowboys Novel

Harper Masterson left college to take over guardianship of her younger sister, Bailey, after their mother skipped town with her boss. It seems to Harper that she can never cut a break though she doesn’t regret putting her life on hold until Bailey graduates from high school and then takes one of the offers that she’s received from several colleges. All she had to do is hang on for three more months until they’ve reached that goal when she looses her job at the tanning salon. Unless she finds a job and quick, Harper won’t be able to pay their bills or their rent!

Harper is best friends with Celia, a barrel racer. When she calls, Harper vents about loosing her job and the lack of jobs in Muddy Gap, WY. Celia has a suggestion for a position, a temporary position if she can get her friend Bran Turner to agree.

Bran is a cattle rancher and is in a tough spot. His full time hand, Les, has broke his hip and it’s the busiest time of the year on the ranch, calving season. He’s asked around, advertised and done everything he can think of to find a temporary hand but has had no luck. When his friend, Celia calls and says she sending someone to help, he thinks it’s someone who knows ranch work, not a beauty queen!

Still, Bran is desperate and Harper persuades him to give her a try, at ranch chores, nothing else. Harper proves that she doesn’t mind getting down and dirty but Bran still has dreams of her some place other than in his fields.

Giving into daydreams might be a mistake but when Bran and Harper discover that they have similar daydreams, they work out how to fulfill them. After all, it’s not forever; Harper’s leaving at the end of the school year, isn’t she?

This is the second book in Lorelei James’s Blacktop Cowboy series. You do not have to read the first book, Corralled to thoroughly enjoy this one. Though many of the characters from the first book show up in this one, this book is based in Muddy Gap and not the rodeo circuit making it different from the first but just as interesting.

Once again, the descriptions of the area are done so well that you can visualize everything from Bran’s fish mailbox to Harper’s small rental. It’s not as if there are paragraphs of just descriptions but the feel, taste and flavor of the region come across through creative sentences and active characters.

These characters are complex and full of life. Bran sees Harper as a beauty queen as she’s won 6 titles but quickly learns what a hard worker she is and how different she is from her mother. Harper discovers that Bran is more than a rancher; he creates art with his fly fishing lures and truly cares about his animals. Harper and Bran interact with friends and family, live in a small but vibrant town and have hopes, dreams as well as desires.

Though Bran has Harper doing lots of ranch chores, within a short period of time they find that working together has them wanting more. With Harper, Bran is able to explore all the sexual activities he had never felt comfortable exploring. Harper found sexual activities she loved but had never tried. Needless to say, the sex is graphic and real yet it’s also filled with emotion and respect.

Saddled and Spurred is a fantastic erotic western romance with awesome characters that leave you wanting more. From hot sexy cowboys to explosive family dynamics, there is something going on from the first page to the last. As I closed this book, I find myself looking forward to the next in this unique series that has you so involved that you could be living in Muddy Gap.
