“Dying Wish” is part of Shannon K. Butcher’s ‘The Sentinel Wars’ series. Iain is one of the Theronai but is set apart from his brethren by the knowledge that it is possible to have lost all of the leaves on one’s lifemark tree and yet still live Soulless. Jackie Patton seeks to flee the sanctuary that is full of desperate lonely Theronai, a human named Grace who has offered the ultimate sacrifice to save the life of the Theronai named Torr but whose death could destroy him, and her sister Helen who has found her own mate. Jackie has been terribly traumatized by her captivity for the past two years but is determined to return to the world and leave behind the Theronai who are desperate to use her to save one of them from the unceasing pain an ultimate loss of Soul. Hope, Logan’s mate, is willing to attempt a risky procedure in order to get help for Grace despite the danger to herself. Jackie and Iain struggle to ignore their attraction to one another because each believes a relationship would be futile, albeit for different reasons, but he is determined to protect her on her foolish quest to return to her former life. Sizzling encounters convince Jackie that they could be compatible but Iain is determined to spare her from his ultimate demise even as he tries to protect her for as long as possible. The question is, who will protect her from his own dark nature?
An exciting addition to the series that provides plenty of complex interrelationships between vastly different beings. The suffering displayed by the Theronai, the women who are being tortured by the Synestri, the races who are dying out, and the complications of the pregnancies being forced upon unwilling women all set a somber backdrop to the intense relationship that develops between the tormented main characters. Glimpses of redemption are provided in this novel, just as the different males (Theronai, Sanguinar) themselves get their glimpses of redemption with the women that they are interacting with. Another fascinating gritty read.
Jackie Patton has been rescued by the Theronai from her captivity and torture at the hands of the Synestryn, only to learn that she's a potential match for the Theronai warriors who need a woman to literally save their lives.
Forced to choose, she unexpectedly selects Iain, a cold-hearted warrior who doesn't want to be saved. Iain is convinced that it's too late-that his soul is already as dead as his former betrothed, killed by the Synestryn. Still, he is the only one she wants. But is Iain indeed beyond saving?
