Defiant by Kris Kennedy is a spellbinding historical romance set against the backdrop of King John and the Magna Carta. With wonderful characters and sharp, engaging dialogue, Ms. Kennedy brings the 13th century alive with a tale full of adventure and romance. With shifting alliances and political scheming, what begins with a mystery becomes a story full of suspense and surprises. I found it to be a completely captivating story.
Jamie Lost is a wonderful character; he's young, powerful and an incredible warrior. He's secretive about his past and is considered somewhat of an enigma. While loyal to King John and carrying out some questionable orders, its clear Jamie has no respect or fondness for John. Armed with his sword and best friend and man at arms by his side, Jamie is unprepared for the emotions which will be unleashed by an encounter with a beautiful waif he finds in the shadows and who's after his target.
Eva is an incredible character; forced to flee England as a young woman, she finds herself back on British soil trying to save the priest, who had once saved her life. Armed with determination, her sharp wit and hidden knives in her clothing, Eva is a formidable opponent. She too has many secrets about her past and is unprepared for the feelings her encounter with the king's knight will unleash.
The scenes between Jamie and Eva are fantastic. Full of witty dialogue and teasing exchanges, the attraction between them builds throughout the story. Joined by Ry, Jamie's best friend and man at arms, and Roger, Eva's ward, they form an uneasy alliance to free Father Peter from mercenaries who have kidnapped him to turn him over to a man they both have reason to hate. As they are forced to spend time together, Jamie and Eva realize they have more in common than they thought and eventually find themselves revealing some of their secrets and giving into their attraction and desire.
The secondary characters are well written and contribute color and background for the story. I especially liked Ry, Jamie's best friend from childhood, and Roger, Eva's ward, whose secret identity was quite surprising. I also liked Father Peter, whose return to England signaled a change in the political climate.
The story concludes with many secrets being revealed and with King John acknowledging the rightful heirs to two wealthy and prominent holdings. Jamie and Eva have a bright future ahead of them as do several of the secondary characters. While peace is established between King John and his rebellious nobles - it's a fleeting peace that only lasts temporarily and within months, civil war is once again in play. I hope this means we'll get to see these characters again in the next story by Ms. Kennedy.
