Kevin Kowalski owns a bar. He use to be a cop and he use to be married but when he found his chief in his wife's bed, he lost both. Now, he has women handing him their phone numbers and making propositions. Kevin's thinking of settling down again and starting a family so he's not taking as much advantage of these offers like he use to.
When a pretty woman comes into his bar with a total jerk, Kevin finds himself attracted to her. When he ends up giving the guy a bloody nose and loosing the woman her job, he's pretty sure that he's not going anywhere with her. But when this same woman shows up at Kevin's brother's wedding, maybe he has been given another chance!
Beth Hanson never thought she'd see that bartender again much less at a wedding were she was working. Though she tries to keep her distance, Kevin is persistent and by the end of the evening Beth finds herself in bed with him. On her way to find something to eat, Kevin says something to her that keeps her going and with the thought that Kevin never wanted to see her again.
However, though they used condoms which only have a 2% failure rate, Beth finds herself pregnant. She knows where Kevin works and knows that telling him is the right thing to do. For someone who loves to travel and never settle down, this pregnancy was not only shocking but life changing. Beth worries about what she's going to do and how she's going to raise a child.
Kevin never expected to see Beth again and really never expected to hear that he was going to become a father. Shocked or not, Kevin is determined to be part of his child's life. Beth suddenly finds herself moved into the apartment across from Kevin's apartment and surrounded by Kevin's numerous family members.
Can she live like this? Is what she's feeling for Kevin real or just hormones? Does Kevin really want her or just the baby? It's going to be an interesting 9 months!
This is the second book in Shannon Stacey's Kowalski family series. You do not need to read the first book to thoroughly enjoy this one. Each can stand on its own. However, some of the story lines concerning the secondary characters are brought over into this story and Joe and Keri do make some appearances.
In fact, the entire Kowalski family makes appearances in this book. From Kevin's parents, Leo and Mary, to all of Kevin's siblings, Terry, Joe and Mike, to the niece and nephews, they all show up and become part of Beth's new life. Kevin warns her that they will make her part of the family, even if they aren't married but she really didn't expect the overwhelming acceptance of the Kowalski clan.
This story has strong emotional pulls. Beth doesn't want Kevin to marry her just because she's pregnant. She doesn't want to depend on him because she shouldn't have to. Kevin wanted Beth before she was pregnant and he still wants her now that she is. His problem is, how to convince Beth! You see both characters side to this problem and only hope that they can figure it out.
But it's the humor that makes this series so interesting and unique. It's intertwined throughout the story so when you think it might be getting heavy and serious, suddenly something totally off the wall pops up making the story light hearted once again. But don't act up too much because Mary is the master of the wooden spoon and all the kids know it!
Sometimes the second book in a series disappoints or isn't quite as good as the first book. This isn't the case with this story. I found myself just as interested in this book as I was in the first and couldn't wait to see what would happen next. The Kowalski family feels so real and their lives seem like they could be happening. I get so wrapped up in their problems you would almost think that they are part of my family!
I strongly recommend this book and this series. The romance and the humor make them a must read.
