Deadly Descent is the story of Captain Devon Crawford an officer who specializes in medical evacuations in Afghanistan and Cam Munro an Air Force Pararescueman. Devon has known Cam for a while, but she's leery of taking their relationship further than friendship even though she is drawn to him. On a recent mission she was forced to abandon a rescue which resulted in the death of Cam's friend Ty. To complicate matters further Devon and Ty had been in a short relationship. Dealing with survivor guilt and a fear of being hurt Devon isn't ready to move further than friendship with Cam.
Cam is a realist, and he knows that in a war zone life can be short so you have to grab on to life and take chances that count. Devon is a chance that counts for him. He's willing to try just about anything to get her to give him a chance, but at the same time he's protective of her career and feelings. He just keeps approaching her and letting her decide if she's ready. Just as they are starting to grow closer and take that next step Devon's chopper is shot down on a rescue mission and Cam and his team are the first on the ground to save Devon and bring her home.
Deadly Descent is well written, the characters are fleshed out and interesting to read about. The supporting cast is also satisfyingly fleshed out and become integral to the story. The book does seem to have a lot of realistic details around working in a war zone as a medical evacuation officer and enlisted life. All in all it was a satisfying read, with a few interesting twists in the middle.
