“Redemption” book 2 in the Lost City Shifters series by Eleri Stone is an edgy romance filled with sensuality and danger.
After reading Mercy, I just could not wait for the follow up book; I was not disappointed. Redemption immerses a reader deeper into the lore of the Yaguara South American jaguar shifter tribe. Nestled deep within the Amazonian rainforest, Sophie Martin and a group of archeologist are virtually on the brink of a major archeological discovery. This discovery could make careers and spell doom for the long hidden secrets of the Yaguara Jaguar tribe. In the quest for knowledge and power there are some willing to kill to uncover and possess the sercret.
Redemption's opening scene is reminiscing of any typical archeological dig. There are various groups of students and hired workers meticulously clearing centuries of clay and dirt to unearth bits of pottery and coin. The occasional shout of triumph can be heard in the distance as a new discovery is unearthed. There is also the unassuming female nestled in the orderly chaos in the form of Sophie Martin, aspiring archeologist hoping to uncover evidence of mysterious lost civilization. At first glance Sophie appears to be just like any dedicated career woman, yet in her heart she burns for the intense relationships that all women desire. Attired in the most work efficient clothing, Sophie has successfully blended into the shadows; garnering not unwanted attention. That is except for the keen eye of a certain Yaguara jaguar male.
The book’s focus revolves around the fate of exiled Yaguara soldier, Adriano, who had the misfortune to be caught up in the pivotal political conspiracy that occurred at the end of book one, Mercy. Betrayed by those he swore to protect and serve, Adriano has endured years of exile through sheer will, cunning and everything in between. On the surface he seems to have only one agenda; retrieve the artifact, return home a hero and be welcomed back into the fold. His mind set and his purpose clear, Adriano is willing to do anything to see his mission through. That is until a certain beauty catches his eye and arouses his predatory instincts. Ms. Stone is superb in her characterization of Adriano. His sexual appetites are as fierce as his animal counterpart, his need and desire to protect his people’s secret, thus forsaking his chance at redemption are commendable.
Sophie is sweet, cute and totally naive in her attempts to hide her attraction for Adriano; all the while secretly admiring him from afar. In some respects she is totally out of her league, yet these are the qualities that draw Adriano to her at every turn. Poor Sophie doesn’t know that Adriano senses are as sharp as his teeth and he has set his sights on her.
Ms. Stone does an excellent job of building the obvious attraction between Sophie and Adriano. Somewhat against each other best intentions, the attraction builds to a fever pitch; each thinking that their relationship is just a fly by night romp in the jungle. As the book progresses a reader is treated to the subtle changes in their relationship; secrets are revealed and true feelings are explored. The chemistry between Sophie and Adriano is hot and spicy and a little wild; just what you would expect from a shifter male.
While I did feel that the climax of the book may have been served better with a few additional scenes surrounding the confrontation with the rouges, I did enjoy the book and look forward to the next installment in the Lost City Shifters series.
