Wow! This is my first Lily Maxton read, but it most definitely won't be my last. Engaging, funny, sweet, and so so readable. I love shorter reads and I could not put this one down until I had enjoyed every single moment of William and Olivia's story.
Maxton's characters are original, not your usual run of the mill debauched rogue and quivering miss. William is flawed and awkward around Olivia. And Olivia is introverted and too used to staying out of the spotlight to like the interest William can't help but show her. I adored their flirtation, their rich, unexpected dialogue, and every moment spent with them from page one until the end.
I am so thrilled to have found a new favorite (yes, I'm already prepared to put Maxton on that list!) historical romance author with a fresh voice and a love for characters with more than a few quirks. Well done, Ms. Maxton! I can't wait for the next installment of the Sisters of Scandal, and now I have to go back and read the first two in the series.
Olivia Middleton isn't the easiest young woman for whom to find a suitable match. Just ask her longsuffering mother. Since her older sister married well, the same is expected of Olivia, though she'd much rather read lurid novels and keep her own company. But that's impossible when she embarks on a visit to Eastwold Abbey, a country estate as potentially spooky as something out of one of her Gothic novels, and encounters the very distracting Mr. William Cross.
To her family, Olivia Middleton is a problem of the most vexing sort. With her eldest two sisters married off, Olivia is now the target of her mother's matrimonial scheming. Shy and somewhat plain, Olivia prefers the thrill of a gothic novel to the hunt for a husband. And as far as her family is concerned, something must be done... But Olivia has no interest in the men paraded before her.
Only the charming and infuriating Mr. William Cross (a rake in the making, and certainly not a suitable husband) holds the slightest fascination for her...
After watching his father die of a broken heart, William has sworn never to wed for a love match. Yet he's intrigued by the bookish Olivia. And though he tried, staying away from her turns out to be impossible. But a scandalous liaison lands them both on the marriage block, William is shocked when Olivia refuses to wed for anything less than love - propriety be damned.
Now William must do the unthinkable... learn to love his reluctant fiancee.
