Raine Hall Danning fell in love with the wrong man and has been paying the price ever since. Knowing that divorce is not an option, and desperate to escape even one more day of abuse, she and her friends come up with the clever idea of arranging her own demise. Her disappearance a mystery, many believe that she was pushed overboard the cruise ship she was on with her husband, Peter Danning. Livid and unwilling to believe his wife has escaped, Mr. Danning hires a detective to find her, and he’s determined. Raine is just as resolute in wanting to stay dead, and gets a job at a ranch in Oregon as an unassuming bookkeeper. Fearful that her new boss, Parker Harrigan will find out her secret, she flinches every time he’s around and can’t stand being touched. It doesn’t help that Parker is gorgeous and quite charming, making it almost impossible for her to be near him Parker doesn’t trust his new employee and wants to check out her references, but he still can’t help being intrigued by her beauty and intelligence.
When Parker finds out the truth, all he wants to do is protect Raine and convince her that all men aren’t evil. He takes time getting to know her and trying to find out more of what she’s hiding deep inside. Raine, on the other hand, enjoys spending time with Parker, but can’t believe he’s for real. She refuses to make another mistake when it comes to relationships; soon both begin to experience feelings that never expect and their lives change forever.
Catherine Anderson brilliantly grabbed my attention right away with a brainy tale of intrigue designed to whet our appetites of what is to come. Raine is no longer the person she was, but her spirit isn’t dead yet as she manages to get away from this monster who has abused her mindlessly and cruelly. When I met Parker, I loved his open demeanor and honesty; and knew that everything he talked about was a true representation of who he was as a man. He’s a hunk, but not quite your typical hero as he charms us with his loquaciousness and quiet strength of character. Raine tries to resist, but finds that he brings out the best in her and she can’t hold back. Both admit to an attraction, but the reader wonders if it will be successful as the villain is not that far away. You’ll sit on the edge of your seat and bite a few nails as you read this one, and it’s an emotionally moving and romantic treat that you’re sure to enjoy.
