Caelen McCabe has married Rionna McDonald after his brother, Alaric marries another woman. The marriage will help strengthen the ties between the two clans which is necessary due to Duncan Cameron trying to take over the area, especially the land Caelen's oldest brother, Ewan's wife holds for their daughter. Caelen doesn't plan on loving his wife, just doing his duty.
Rionna has dreamed of marrying a man who would accept her as she is. She knows that most men won't accept a wife who likes to fight, practice manly arts and wear men's clothes. Rionna knows nothing about womanly past times.
Against the wishes of Rionna's father, Caelen takes over as McDonald Laird. It's going to be a tough challenge to get these men to follow someone who is not a McDonald but that is the only way they will be able to hold off Cameron.
As Caelen and Rionna work on figuring out their marriage and making the McDonald clan strong, they will have to learn to trust each other. Eventually that trust will be tested and the outcome means the death for someone!
This is the last book in Maya Bank's trilogy about the McCabe brothers. Each can be read and enjoyed by themselves but the books are much better if read in order. This historical romance is set in the Scottish highlands during a time of unrest.
The characters are excellent. Caelen had once given his heart to Duncan Cameron's cousin who betrayed him causing the death of his father and the rape and death of Ewin's first wife. He doesn't ever want to give that power to another. Rionna has spent her life trying to avoid her father who is abusive. She found a place to hide by working with his men. Now, she's being forced to change and she doesn't like it!
The secondary characters are just as well rounded as the primary making the entire book comes alive. You can visualize the daily life of the keep through all the characters interactions.
The intrigue and power plays are festinating. Ewan's wife has property that is being held for her heirs by the king. Cameron wants to over throw the king and this property would be the perfect way to do this. The McCabe's now have to find a way to keep Ewan's wife and infant daughter safe and to protect the land. Rionna's father wants his place back as Laird and who better to strike an alliance with for that purpose than Cameron!
This is a romance and there is definitely a love story in this book. In fact, don't be surprised to find lots of hot sex going on, even if the main characters aren't sure as to what is going on with their relationship, they do know that they are attracted to each other.
As usual Ms Banks grabbed my interest and kept it from start to finish. Her characters are unique and her storytelling is perfection. She brings the era alive and doesn't leave out the nasty stuff like killing people. Yet, she also doesn't leave out the good stuff like hot sex with hot men.
Fantastic book for anyone who loves a romantic story with a bit more complex plot than usual, hot men who will put everything on the line for those they love and women who don't lay back and let the men do all the work.
In a tale of strong ties and true love, Maya Banks’s trilogy comes to its stunning conclusion, as the youngest McCabe brother uses sword and seduction to save his clan—and seal his heart.
Caelen McCabe’s young, reckless heart nearly destroyed his clan. Now, putting family loyalty above all else, he steps up to marry his older brother’s jilted bride and salvage the uneasy alliance between two clans. While beautiful Rionna McDonald is a fit wife for any man, Caelen trusts no woman, especially not this sweet temptress who torments him with white-hot longing.
As the sacrificial lamb in her father’s power game, Rionna will do her duty but vows to protect her heart and her pride from humiliation. Despite everything, though, the heat in Caelen’s touch melts her defenses, and she craves the sensual delights of a husband who guards his emotions as fiercely as his clan. But when the ultimate battle for the McCabe legacy is upon them, Rionna’s true warrior spirit emerges. She will risk the wrath of her father, the fury of her enemies, and her life to prove to Caelen that his wife’s love is too precious to lose.
